The tattoo.dev Doctrine

Twelve principles written with real input from tattoo artists, studio owners, receptionists, and clients. Not a values page — a contract. Every API decision, field name, and default behavior traces back to one of them. If it violates the doctrine, we don't ship it.

01

01

Respect the Ritual Above All

The moment of tattooing is sacred — the consultation, the trust between artist and client, the act of creation on living skin. tattoo.dev exists to support everything around the ritual, never to automate, commoditize, or interfere with it. Technology ends where the human craft begins.

02

02

Optimize for Everyone's Happiness

We build for real human moments. Artists get time back for creation. Clients get clarity and trust. Studios run smoother. Receptionists, managers, and apprentices experience less chaos. When the whole ecosystem feels supported, better tattoos and better experiences happen.

03

03

Convention over Configuration

Tattoo life has natural patterns. We ran real studio workflows through the system and baked the sensible defaults in — inquiry routing, deposit state, consent flow, aftercare timing. Builders start immediately. Only the parts that are genuinely unique to your product need customization.

04

04

The Menu is Omakase

We've studied how real tattoo shops, artists, and clients operate. tattoo.dev delivers one complete, integrated system — discovery, portfolios, booking, payments, consent, aftercare, and communication. Trust the full experience first: the defaults came from real studios. Go à la carte only when your product genuinely demands it.

05

05

No One Paradigm

Solo artists, multi-chair studios, traveling artists, flash-focused, appointment-only, or walk-in — every model is valid. We support real diversity instead of forcing one "correct" workflow. The system bends to people, not the other way around.

06

06

Craft Beautiful Experiences

Every interaction should feel respectful and satisfying. Clean, mobile-first artist portfolios. Simple, trustworthy booking. Professional consent and aftercare. Thoughtful dashboards. Beauty and care in the tools reflect respect for the craft.

07

07

Power to the Artists, Studios & Clients

Everyone owns their data. Artists own their portfolios, designs, reputation, and history. Studios own their operations and schedules. Clients own their booking records, consents, and aftercare information. Full portability is non-negotiable. No vendor lock-in. Because the core is open source, the community can inspect, improve, or fork it. Control stays with the people doing the work.

08

08

Provide Sharp Needles

We trust professionals. Artists and studios get powerful, flexible tools — not dumbed-down interfaces. With great power comes built-in responsibility through clear governance and ritual protections.

09

09

Progress with Care

The industry evolves — new styles, regulations, techniques, and expectations. We move forward boldly but never break active workflows without clear notice and smooth migration paths. Stability and respect for existing practices matter.

10

10

Push Up a Big Tent

tattoo.dev is for everyone: artists of every style and career stage, clients of every background, studios of every size and model, plus receptionists, apprentices, suppliers, and supporters. The more inclusive and diverse the ecosystem, the stronger it becomes.

11

11

Co-Design with the Industry

We do not build for the tattoo world. We build with it. The inquiry flow schema came from watching real artists qualify clients. The portfolio primitives came from how artists actually organize their work. The deposit state machine came from how studios protect their time. Working tattooers and studio owners review the roadmap — not as beta testers, but as co-authors. That's how we stay grounded.

12

12

Build the Missing Infrastructure

We are not here to replace the artist's hand, eye, or ritual. We are here to build the plumbing — mobile portfolios that travel with the artist, verified data that builds trust, intelligent operations that reduce admin, and governance that protects the craft from abuse. Procreate gave artists better brushes. tattoo.dev gives the entire ecosystem better infrastructure — respectful, responsible, and built to last.

Built on principle

The doctrine shapes every API decision.

These principles aren't aspirational — they're enforced. Read the docs to see how they translate into concrete API decisions, data ownership guarantees, and field-level design choices.
